Fishing 101

Fishing is a fun hobby and pastime for many, but it takes patience and practice! To some, fishing may seem daunting, but with some gear and the tips below, you’ll be on your way to catching some fish this week. Below are some basics you should know to get you closer to a successful fishing adventure.

SAFETY MEASURES

The most essential items to bring along on your fishing trip besides your gear are

sunscreen and water. Fishing is all about the long game, so while you are drifting in the sun, staying hydrated and protected from the sun is vital! This is where our Fishin' Michigan Bucket Hat can come in handy too. If you are fishing from a boat and prone to seasickness, don't forget Dramamine and some snacks. It’s said that seasickness strikes more often if one is hungry.

ARE YOU LICENSED?

Whether you want to fish for fun or sport, it is vital to make sure you have all the correct permits and documentation with you to ensure you do not get ticketed. The fish and game departments are known to enforce licensing laws. Licenses for your state are sold online, in fishing shops, and most sporting goods stores. In most states you can purchase an inexpensive day pass, however, an annual pass is a better deal if you plan on going more than once.

RIGGING AND LURING

Correct rigging, bait, and/or lures are essential for a successful fishing trip. If you aren't going with someone who has fished before, you can learn and practice using the correct fishing knots for your lures here. When using a lure, cast it out and keep your rod tip up, gathering slack to keep the line taut to your lure. Try to mock the way your bait would move through the water if it were a small fish. Let the bait move naturally, but not too quickly through the water. If you get a strike, in most cases it is necessary to “set” the hook by pulling back sharply on the rod tip. Then reel in your catch, but don’t use more force than your fishing line will allow or this one will be “the one that got away!”

FISHING ETIQUETTE

It’s important to be respectful and mindful as you try your hand at fishing. If the area is crowded, try to give others plenty of room, especially if you are new to the sport. You don’t want to be flailing around while others are trying to fish.

Catch-and-release is a great way to fish, but only catch what you will eat if you’re fishing for food. Pay attention to local signage and leave the area as you found it.

There’s nothing like fishing to get you immersed in the great outdoors! Remember to be patient and have fun on the water!
